It is believed by historians that jewelry began as a functional item used to fasten articles of clothing together and was later adapted as purely aesthetic ornamentation. The Annular Brooch was one of these forms of early jewelry and was composed of an open circular form with a pin hinged across the center used to hold fabric together. Within the historic Annular Brooch, the concept of “form follows function” is demonstrated. By using the shape of the historic Annular Brooch as the motif and inspiration for this jewelry line the choice was made to focus not on the functional aspect, but to highlight the minimal elegance of the functional form.
